In something of a homecoming, I had the opportunity to speak at the Trinity Grammar School Preparatory School assembly about Empire of the Waves in mid-November. Since I wrote this novel as a kind of letter to my strange and troubled ten year old self, it was very moving to be speaking in that same place my own ten year old self once dreamed of stories. It was also an honour to be there as the guest of Christine Brown, the last teacher remaining from my time at the school. This was Christine’s final term teaching at Trinity before her retirement, so it was a special moment for us both. Congratulations to Christine for a long and brilliant career sharing a love of learning with so many young people!
